What is Anxiety?
Anxiety is a natural response to stress or perceived danger, where the body prepares to face a challenge. Everyone experiences it differently. For some, it may be restlessness before an exam. For others, it could be racing thoughts, sweating, or difficulty breathing when faced with uncertainty.
When anxiety becomes constant, even without a clear reason, it can develop into an anxiety
disorder that affects emotions, thoughts, and physical health.
Common Signs of Anxiety
• Persistent worry or fear that feels uncontrollable
• Restlessness or difficulty relaxing
• Racing heartbeat, sweating, or trembling
• Trouble sleeping or concentrating
• Avoiding people or situations due to fear
• Stomach upset or headaches without medical cause
If you notice several of these signs lasting for weeks or months, it may be time to seek help.
The Cost of Anxiety
Constant anxiety takes a toll on the body and mind. It raises levels of the stress hormone cortisol, which increases blood pressure and may lead to heart problems, stroke, or sexual dysfunction. A 2017 Lancet study found that overactive brain regions related to fear responses may also raise heart disease risk by triggering immune system overactivity. In simple terms, anxiety affects health, work, and relationships and can reduce overall quality of life.
What Can You Do?
1. Acknowledge your feelings. Recognize your anxiety rather than ignore it.
2. Practice breathing and mindfulness. Deep, slow breathing helps calm stress.
3. Stay active and connected. Exercise and spend time with supportive people.
4. Limit stimulants. Reduce caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine.
5. Set healthy routines. Maintain regular sleep, diet, and relaxation habits.
6. Seek professional support. Talk to a counselor or psychologist. Piquant Health Foundation encourages open conversations and helps connect individuals to care.
